Boss Icon - Lei Shi
Introduction

This guide is intended to provide a comprehensive description of theencounter with Lei Shi in Terrace of Endless Spring. It is targeted at anyonewho desires to understand the fight mechanics.

This guide is updated for World of Warcraft MoP 5.4.

Lei Shi is the third boss in the Terrace of Endless Spring raidinstance. This is a straightforward, single-phase fight, which does not poseany significant positional challenges.

The difficulty of the fight comes mostly from the strict enrage timer, whichis made harder to beat due to the fact that Lei Shi is often unattackable.

3. Overview of the Fight↑top

The encounter against Lei Shi is a single-phase fight. The fightrequires two tanks, who must alternate tanking the boss. As the fightgoes on, Lei Shi's casting speed progressively increases, resulting in moreand more tank damage.

When Lei Shi reaches 80%, 60%, 40%, and 20% health, she summons severaladds, and goes immune until at least one add has been killed.

Additionally, she sometimes disappears and must be damaged through AoEattacks in order to return.

Finally, a few times during the fight, Lei Shi will channel a sort of windthat pushes all players away from her and damages them. Players will have tomove against the current and damage Lei Shi in order for the effect tobreak.

4. Abilities↑top

Lei Shi does not perform melee attacks. Instead, she constantly spamsSpray Icon Spray at her current target. This deals a large amount of Frost damage tothat player and all players within 2.5 yards, and adds a stacking debuff toall affected players, which increases Frost damage taken by 16% per stack, for10 seconds.

Afraid Icon Afraid is a buff that Lei Shi gains a stack of each time she loses10% of her maximum health. For each stack, Lei Shi's casting speed is increasedby 8% for the remainder of the encounter. This results in much faster (and thusmore frequent) casts of Spray.

When Lei Shi reaches 80%, 60, 40%, and 20% health, she shields herself(becoming immune to all damage), and spawns several Elemental adds calledAnimated Protectors. These adds have normal threat tables, and have noabilities. Their melee attacks are extremely damaging, but they are susceptibleto crowd-control. Lei Shi will remain shielded until one of the AnimatedProtectors is killed, at which point her shield will vanish, and all remainingAnimated Protectors will despawn. For the first two Protect casts (at 80% and60% health), Lei Shi summons 3 adds, while on the final two Protect casts, she summons 4.

Finally, Lei Shi has two more abilities that she casts, although thetiming of them was rather erratic on the Beta.

  • Hide Icon Hide is an ability that Lei Shi sometimes casts. She goes invisible, and cannot be targeted. Lei Shi will continue to cast Spray (at random raidmembers, this time, rather than at the tank) while in this state. The only wayto force Lei Shi to become visible again is to deal a certain amount of damageto her. While she is not visible, if a player is close enough to Lei Shi'slocation, they can see certain indicators of her whereabouts (clouds, sparks,etc.). Players then have to spam AoE abilities in this location.
  • Get Away! Icon Get Away! is an ability that Lei Shi sometimes casts. She teleportsto the center of the platform, and begins channeling a spell for 30 seconds. This spell pushes all players away from Lei Shi, dealing a large amount ofShadow damage to them every second. Players who run towards Lei Shi (so, againstthe current) only take half the damage. Lei Shi can be forced to stop thischannel prematurely by dealing 4% of her maximum health in damage to her.

5. Strategy↑top

The strategy for defeating Lei Shi can be summarised as follows.

  • Have the two tanks alternate tanking her, in order for the debuff appliedby Spray Icon Spray not to stack too high.
  • When Lei Shi casts Hide Icon Hide, distribute your DPS players evenly on theplatform, so that you can quickly find Lei Shi and break her out ofinvisibility.
  • When Lei Shi casts Get Away! Icon Get Away!, run in towards her and deal as muchdamage as you can through instant casts, in order to force her to stop thechannel.
  • When Lei Shi casts Protect Icon Protect, focus down one of theAnimated Protectors. When one Protector is killed, the others will simplydespawn. The other Protectors should be crowd-controlled or tanked.

5.1. Positioning

Your raid should form a triangle, where one corner is your main tank, oneis your off-tank, and the other is the rest of your raid, with Lei Shi locatedin the center. This will allow the two tanks to taunt Lei Shi off of each otherwithout risking having both of them affected by the same Spray Icon Spray. The raidcan stack safely together, since there are no abilities (other than Spray)that deal damage in an area.

5.2. Dealing with Protect

One of the more delicate parts of the encounter is when Lei Shi castsProtect Icon Protect. Even while Lei Shi is shielded, she will continue to spamSpray Icon Spray at her main target. Additionally, the Animated Protectorsdeal very high melee damage.

You will want to have a tank switch right before the protectors reach theraid (you have a few seconds of warning thanks to their spawning animation),in order to allow as much time as possible to kill the AnimatedProtectors. This is because, once your off-tank picks them up, it will bevery difficult to perform a tank-switch between your tanks, and the damage oftanking both Lei Shi and the adds at the same time is too great for a singletank.

Therefore, your aim is to have the Protectors killed before a new tankswitch is required.

We remind you that only one Protector needs to be killed for Lei Shi'simmunity to break, and that when one Protector dies, the others immediatelydespawn. Therefore, there is absolutely no benefit in AoEing the Protectors(they do not share health pools), and you should focus on killing one ofthem.

We encourage you to crowd-control the Animated Protectors (spellslike Bind Elemental Icon Bind Elemental work well) you are not killing, since this willreduce the damage your tank takes, and it will make this part of the fighteasier.

5.3. Dealing with Get Away

Get Away! Icon Get Away! is another difficult mechanic to deal with. The damage thatthe wind current deals to your raid is very high if you are standing still. Therefore, all raid members must be moving forward, towards Lei Shi. However, while moving forward, you cannot cast any abilities with a cast time (unlessyou are using class-specific abilities that allow you to do so, such asSpiritwalker's Grace Icon Spiritwalker's Grace for Shamans, or Kil'jaeden's Cunning Icon Kil'jaeden's Cunning for Warlocks),which greatly reduces your raid's DPS and healing.

Your raid should use cooldowns at this time, both defensive(Devotion Aura Icon Devotion Aura and Rallying Cry Icon Rallying Cry are excellent) and offensive, inorder to survive more easily.

Your goal is to damage Lei Shi for 4% of her maximum health as quicklyas possible, in order to break the effect. We suspect that DoT classes andclasses that can do a lot of damage while moving (such as Hunters) will beat an advantage here, but it remains to be seen how much damage Get Away! Icon Get Away!will do, and how much health Lei Shi has.

6. When to Use Heroism/Bloodlust/Time Warp↑top

We recommend using Heroism Icon Heroism/Bloodlust Icon Bloodlust/Time Warp Icon Time Warp towardsthe end of the fight, particularly when Lei Shi is below 20% health. This isthe part of the fight when Lei Shi deals the most damage, so you will want tokill her as quickly as possible.

Ideally, you should use Heroism/Bloodlust/Time Warp immediately afterdealing with a Get Away! Icon Get Away!, Hide Icon Hide, or Protect Icon Protect phase, in orderto minimise the downtime you have while the cooldown is active.

7. Learning the Fight↑top

The Lei Shi fight is not a complicated one, and the boss has astrikingly low number of abilities that your raid must deal with.

The first thing to master is the tank switch that must be performedregularly. This is a little more difficult than usual tank switches due tothe fact that the debuff applied to the main tank by Spray Icon Spray can splash tothe off-tank if they are too near, and also due to the high frequency ofSpray casts. Therefore, properly executing the triangle formation we describedin the guide is important.

The next big test for your raid will be the ability to survive the damageof Get Away! Icon Get Away!, and to deal the required amount of damage to Lei Shi tobreak the effect. This will most likely take some practice at first, and youshould not hesitate to use any available cooldowns to get through this phase(you can even save your cooldowns specifically for it).

Finally, the Protect Icon Protect "phases" should be handled with care, as themelee damage from the Animated Protectors is high and can surprise yourraid.

Overall, however, there is very little synergy between Lei Shi's abilities,so the tasks that your raid needs to get familiar with can be considered andlearned independently of each other.

8. Achievement: Face Clutchers↑top

The Face Clutchers Icon Face Clutchers achievement is part of theGlory of the Pandaria Raider Icon Glory of the Pandaria Raider meta achievement. The achievement requires allof your raid members to be affected by a debuff calledParasitic Clutch Icon Parasitic Clutch when you defeat Lei Shi. The Parasitic Clutch debuffis obtained by attacking certain adds called Parasitoid Sha, which arelocated in the waters around Lei Shi's platform.

These adds just swim around in the water and do not do anything unlessattacked. When attacked, each add will fixate on the player that attacked it,applying the Parasitic Clutch debuff, which is a DoT that deals a small amountof Shadow damage to that player every 3 seconds. There is a limited number ofadds in the water, but once they attach themselves to players, new adds soonspawn in the water.

Once each player is fixated upon by an add (which essentially latches ontoyour character), all you need to do is complete the encounter as you normallywould. There is added difficulty due to the increased raid damage from theadds, and this is something you simply need to survive.

9. Heroic Mode↑top

The Heroic mode for this fight presents an innovative new ability thatactually renders the fight considerably more difficult. For most players, thefight will appear to be largely unchanged, but a few select raid members willhave some crucial tasks to perform.

9.1. Differences From Normal Mode

Lei Shi and the Animated Protectors both have increased health, and deal increased damage. The Animated Protectors in particular will one-shotany non-tanks that they hit, and even tanks will take extreme damage.

The new mechanic is something called Scary Fog Icon Scary Fog. This is a stackingdebuff that Lei Shi constantly applies to all players who are not withinaround 10 yards of her hitbox. The debuff lasts 35 seconds, and has twoeffects.

  • It causes the affected player to take a small amount of Shadow damageevery 3 second, per stack.
  • It causes all targets (friendly or hostile) around the affected player totake 10% increased damage, per stack. We are not sure about the radius of theeffect, but it appears to be about 10 yards.

9.2. Strategy

The strategy of Heroic mode is pretty simple. Your raid's goal is to spendas much of the fight as possible with Lei Shi being debuffed by theScary Fog Icon Scary Fog (so, by having someone affected by Scary Fog in range of her). All the while, you want to make sure that no one else in your raid is affectedby the debuff.

You will assign several players to stand outside of Lei Shi's range, stacking Scary Fog on themselves, and moving in next to Lei Shi in analternating fashion to cause her to take increased damage.

9.2.1. Stacking Scary Fog

As we said, Scary Fog Icon Scary Fog stacks on players who are essentially outside ofLei Shi's melee range. The goal of your raid is to have two players (as wellas possibly a third as a back-up, as we will discuss below) standing outsideof Lei Shi's range, and having the Scary Fog stacking on them. These playersshould be well away from the rest of the raid and the tanks, and they shouldalso be out of range of each other (so that they do not cause one another totake increased damage).

After the start of the fight, when these players reach a reasonable numberof stacks (between 5 and 9 stacks is a good number, but this depends on howmany stacks of the DoT the healers can heal through on the affect players), one of them should move into Lei Shi'smelee range, where they will remain until their Scary Fog drops off. At thispoint, the other player who is stacking Scary Fog will move in, while the firstplayer goes back out and re-starts stacking Scary Fog on themselves.

You can also have three players stacking Scary Fog on themselves, toensure that you never get to a situation where no one has Scary Fog, but thismay not be necessary.

9.2.2. Positioning

Your raid should be stacked very close being Lei Shi, either to her rightor to her left. This will allow the player with Scary Fog to move in onLei Shi on the other side from where the raid is, and remain there to debuffthe boss without touching the raid.

The tanks still need to taunt off of each other to deal with the debuffthat Lei Shi stacks on them, and they cannot stand in the same position. Theseare positioning constraints that you will need to iron out on your firstattempts, but it is possible to have the two tanks, the raid, and the ScaryFog player all in Lei Shi's range without any conflicts.

9.2.3. Handing Protects

Protect Icon Protect is much more dangerous on Heroic mode, since the adds deala lot more damage than in Normal mode. To ensure that the designated add diesquickly, you should have someone with Scary Fog be in the add's range. In 25-man (or in 10-man, if you are using 3 tanks), you can have the add tankstand outside of Lei Shi's range before a Protect is cast so that they stackScary Fog on themselves.

9.2.4. Handling Get Away!

Get Away! Icon Get Away! is much more damaging in Heroic mode, so it is imperativethat Lei Shi is debuffed with Scary Fog Icon Scary Fog while she is casting this, so thatGet Away! is broken as quickly as possible. The player who is debuffing Lei Shiwith Scary Fog has to be careful not to accidentally debuff any other playersaround her (and these players must also be careful of the same thing), becausetaking increased damage during Get Away! will very quickly lead to deaths.

9.2.5. Handling Hide

Hide Icon Hide must be broken as quickly as possible, since Lei Shi does notstack Scary Fog Icon Scary Fog during this time, which can cause the stacks to drop offfrom the Scary Fog players if it goes on for too long. Many abilities can beused to find Lei Shi quickly at the start of a hide, Mind Sear Icon Mind Sear andHalo Icon Halo being two prominent examples.
